Session Border Controllers (SBCs) are Voice Firewalls for Your Network

An Obsolete SBC Puts Your Voice Network at Risk

Our records show you are still using one of Ribbon's older Q-Series SBCs - GENBAND Q10/Q20/Q21. These are security appliances, essentially voice firewalls, often deployed at the edge of open networks. To keep your network secure, these elements and their embedded software components should be up-to-date. These Q10/Q20/Q21 SBCs contain open source software stacks with older versions of Linux OS, OpenSSL, Apache Webserver, etc. These older stacks contain unpatched security vulnerabilities, increasing the risk of bad actors exploiting these vulnerabilities for network access.

Unfortunately, the frequency and severity of threats are growing exponentially. Depending on an SBC with 5-year-old software (or more) to protect your network is risky. Ribbon offers a range of modern SBCs, with the latest software, to protect your communications environment. We also have skilled professional services staff to simplify the transition.

Choose from our SBC 5400, virtualized SBC SWe, or cloud-native SBC CNe, depending on your scalability and deployment needs.

Why Is This Important?

We appreciate your loyalty to Ribbon. We're committed to keeping your voice communications & data networks protected. These End of Support and/or End of Life notifications are sent out only when products have reached the end of their lifecycle.

As we mentioned previously, as the software on these platforms ages, it inherently becomes more vulnerable to bad actors. Common open-source elements such as the Linux operating system, OpenSSL, TLS, and similar software components are no longer being patched or updated. In addition, these products may violate your organization’s compliance or risk management policies or data management governance rules.

(These EOS & EOL notifications are only applicable to the specific models listed above.)

Not Sure What To Do?

How do I know if I have these specific SBCs? If you are unsure of the model(s) of SBCs installed in your environment, please contact us. One of our support staff can confirm if this notice impacts you.

I received an email but it is not my area of responsibility. If you received an email from Ribbon but are not responsible for your communications network, we suggest forwarding this information to your CIO, CISO, VP of IT, or similar person(s).

We do not have/no longer have this particular equipment. If you have already replaced your Q-series Session Border Controllers, then you can disregard this notice.
